🏢 Moodle Workplace: the Moodle built for companies
Most people know Moodle LMS, the world's most widely used open source learning platform. Fewer know there is a separate edition aimed at corporate training: Moodle Workplace.
It is not a plugin or a free download. According to Moodle's official information:
Moodle Workplace is licensed software only available via our Moodle Premium Certified Partners and Service Providers.
In other words: licensed software, built on top of Moodle LMS, available only through Moodle's Premium Certified Partners and Service Providers. You do not download it from moodle.org like the LMS.
🔍 How it differs from Moodle LMS
Moodle Workplace starts from the Moodle LMS core and adds tools designed for HR and internal training. These are its headline features, per the official page:
- Multi-tenant architecture. Each division, department, or franchise can get its own platform within the same installation — its own branding, users, and admins.
- Tailored training pathways. Automatically assign learning and competencies to people or teams based on rules (Dynamic rules).
- Automated compliance training. Automatic recertification and personalised certificates to keep compliance up to date.
- User management and hierarchies. Roles, reporting lines, and permissions that mirror the real org chart.
- Learning catalogue. Personalised course discovery for each employee.
- Report builder. Custom reports with filtered, aggregated data about learners and programs.
- Badges and diplomas. Automated recognition of achievements.
- Your own mobile app. Access content, even offline, from a branded app.
- 20+ languages. Multilingual out of the box.
🤔 LMS or Workplace? When it is worth it
Not everyone needs Workplace. A practical rule of thumb:
- Moodle LMS is enough if you train students or clients, run an academy, a university, or open courses, and you do not need to separate organisations or automate compliance at scale. It is free, open source, and hugely flexible.
- Moodle Workplace is for you if you run internal corporate training: several companies or departments on a single platform, employee onboarding, recurring compliance certifications, automatic pathways by role, and reporting to management.
The good news: because Workplace is built on Moodle LMS, your investment in content, integrations, and know-how carries over. Moving from one to the other is not starting from scratch.
🛠️ Where a developer fits in
Even though Workplace is contracted through a Certified Partner, the technical work — migrations, custom plugins, integrations with your CRM, ERP, or HR system, themes, and automations with Dynamic rules — still needs hands that know the Moodle core inside out.
